Antonio Pauciulo

“Human flesh and oil painting feel so similar that sometimes I'm surprised that the flesh of a painting is cold to the touch.”

Antonio Pauciulo conceives painting as a language capable of letting “artificial creatures” emerge. He uses a performative process for bringing the polymorphous artificial-animal nature of humans into the images of painting. “Painting is a physical and at same time conceptual activity which creates conscious and unconscious objects. It's capable of bringing us unforeseen images coming out from a tactile and body to body relationship between artist and painting, whereby the mental dimension is subsequent and mostly concerns decisions and choices rather than creation of events.”

Pauciulo was born in 1969 in Vico Equense, Italy. From 1987 to 1994, he studied psychology and philosophy at La Sapienza University, and painting in 1992 at the Academy of Fine Arts in Rome. In 1994 he co founded in Rome an artists group named grupposangiorgio, which its main purpose was to create a total artwork by using a multimedia and multisensory language.

His studies led him to discover the philosopher Ludwig Wittgenstein, whose ideas on the correlation between language and life continue to influence the artist today. “The language of painting is the real messenger of the narrative and not just the iconography.” In 2003, his experience of the retrospective of Nicolas de Stäel at Pompidou Museum in Paris gave a strong impulse to these ideas, as Pauciulo perceived that "paintings stand as living creatures, they were any illustration of anything, but just real in themself.”

His focus on the materiality and organicity of painting is motivated by personal and political ideas. “In the West the contemporary disruption of the tangible world is the result of long-term efforts to get rid of the flesh because of the perishability of the body and fear of death,” the artist said. “Our very purpose is to transform humans into something enduring: a pure intangible idea.” Pauciulo believes that through enhancement of individual knowledge is possible to realize far reaching social transformations. The personal is the political. “The masses one speaks through propaganda. To individuals one speaks through an authentic personal, sometimes fragile, message.”

Pauciulo has exhibited across Europe (Rome, Berlin, London, Paris, Düsseldorf, Leipzig, Milan, Barcelona, Stockholm, Turin) and collaborated with various cultural institutions including the NGBK (Neue Gesellschaft für Bildende Kunst or New Visual Arts Society) in Berlin and the museum Palace of the Arts in Naples. He was represented in various European art fairs such as The Other, Turin (2020), Supermarket, Stockholm (2012), III Berliner Kunstsalon in Berlin and Artissima 13 in Turin (2006). His work is represented in public and private collections internationally.

Antonio Pauciulo currently lives and works in Leipzig, Germany.
